MP URGES FOR FAIRER FUNDING FOR BIRMINGHAM IN BUDGET

Yardley MP Jess Phillips, alongisde other Birmingham Labour MPs, presented a letter to the Chancellor about fairer funding for Birmingham.
 
The letter, written by Birmingham City Council's Leader Ian Ward, sets out the case to the Chancellor for the need for fairer funding for Birmingham.
 
Jess Phillips MP said:
 
"Birmingham is currenlty being shortchanged by £100 million by this Government."
 

MP SIGNS EDM ON UPSKIRTING LEGISLATION

Yardley MP Jess Phillips has signed an Early Day Motion calling for legislation on 'Upskirting'.
 
The taking of upskirt photos is not currently recognised as a specific sexual offence under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Currently, upskirters may be prosecuted for “outraging public decency” if the act is witnessed by two or more people. However, if there are fewer than two witnesses, there is currently no specific law to prosecute upskirting in public.
 

MP SPEAKS AT 'JANE'S PLACE' RECEPTION

Yardley MP Jess Phillips spoke at a reception held to celebrate the new refuge, 'Jane's Place'.
 
In Burnley, specialist refuges have been looking for ways to expand the range of services that they are able to offer to victims of domestic violence and 'Jane’s Place' is part of a vision to do more. The Refuge, which opened on Friday 16th June 2017, is called Jane’s Place in memory of Jane Clough who was brutally killed by her ex-partner in 2010.
 

MP CALLS FOR A SPECIALIST SEXUAL VIOLENCE SERVICE IN PARLIAMENT

Yardley MP Jess Phillips spoke out in the statement to the House on harassment and abuse in Parliament.
 
Andrea Leadsom MP, Leader of the House of Commons, gave an oral statement to the House on the steps that were being taken to address harassment and abuse in Parliament.
 
Jess spoke out in the statement to urge for there to be a specialist sexual violence service in place in Parliament and for the process to extend to people who use to work here, acitivists and journalists.

The Patchwork Foundation is a non-profit organisation that helps to engage under-represented, deprived and minority communities within British society through exposure and engagement into the political environment.
 

MP CALLS FOR INCREASED POLICE FUNDING

Yardley MP Jess Phillips, alongside other MPs from the West Midlands, is calling for increased Police funding to be announced in the upcoming Budget.
 
Jess and her colleagues met with the Police Minister Nick Hurd to discuss the upcoming budget and the need for increased Police funding.
 
Jess highlighted in the meeting that 2,000 Police Officers have been lost in the West Midlands since 2010 and that the West Midlands Police are dealing with more 999 calls than the Metropolitan Police.

Progress on the new Stechford Leisure Centre is well under way and to celebrate the next milestone, Jess and Councillor Dad placed the last wall tile in the main pool hall.

YARDLEY WOMEN'S FORUM HOLDS THEIR FIRST MEETING

Yardley MP Jess Phillips hosted the first meeting of the Yardley Women's Forum.
 
A number of women in the CLP had approached Jess and Sharon Thompson, Yardley's CLP Women’s Officer, saying they wanted to set up a local Labour Women's Forum.
 
The first meeting was held at South Yardley Library, with tea and cake, so the women could discuss issues that are important to them and what action they could take as a group.
