Yardley MP Jess Phillips has co-signed a letter to the Home Secretary calling on her to ensure the safety of women at abortion clinics.
The letter sets out the experience that many women go through when attending an abortion clinic due to protests outside; being shouted at, being called 'murderers' and having to look at distressing, graphic and often inaccurate images of aborted foetuses.
It calls on the Government to bring forward legislation to introduce buffer zones outside abortion clinics and pregnancy advice bureaux. This is not to stop protests, but to ask protestors to instead make use of any of the many places they could protest; such as Parliament Square to town centres.
Jess Phillips MP said:
"Women who are using these clinics are not asking for anyone's opinion on their decision. They have made their own decision, which could be for a number of different reasons, and we need to protect their right to do so."
